Essendon 15 wins and 3rd.

After round 7 updated analysis: 16 wins and 2nd

Initial tip was terrific. Not even Bomber fans believed they would finish 3rd, and now they are upgraded to 2nd. They were tipped to improve based on the improvement of players due to the bulking up program plus natural improvement. The soft tissue injuries appear to be easing off and they are a chance to be 10 and 1 at the bye. It gets tougher towards the end of the season with matches against Cats, Hawks, Crows (away), Blues and Pies in rounds 17 – 23

At end of season: 11 wins and 11th.  A long way off!! But the Dons were 8 and 1 after 9 rounds (at which stage the tip for 3rd looked to be an inspired one).  Then the soft tissue injuries plus an unexplained loss to the Dees saw them plummet down the table.  But it wasn’t just injuries – it was also the fact that the team was a year or so from maturity.

Fremantle 9 wins and 14th.

After round 7 updated analysis: 12 wins and 9th

Initial tip was too pessimistic, assuming that the Ross Lyon game plan would take a while to sink in.

But their upset wins vs Cats and Saints have proven otherwise. The jury is still out on whether they are a genuine finals chance. The next 6 matches will help clarify things. They play Hawks (in Tassie), Eagles, Crows (home), Tigers (away), Dons (home) and Pies (away).

At end of season: 14 wins and 7th. This was the worst prediction on the lot!  Two things threw me off track.  Firstly, Ross Lyon took a long time to get the Saints playing his way.  It was expected that the same thing may happen with Freo.

Also, the Dockers had open training sessions in the pre-season and every bump, bruise and ache was reported widely by the bloggers.  this led me to overestimate their injury woes.  Having said that, they did finish well despite missing Sandilands and Fyfe for long periods. Then the beat the reigning premiers in a Melbourne final!  A big tick to the Dockers in 2012
