Real NAB Cup form

NAB CUP form seasonally adjusted

Red figures represent a measure of the depth of talent left out of the team in each NAB match, but that are expected to be available for R1.  Numbers are derived by using 4 for superstars (Ablett, Swan, Cox etc), 3 for stars, 2 for contributors and 1 for fringe players
Example: NAB round 2 Fremantle’s score of 11 was made up of Barlow (3), Hill (2), Mayne (2), Pavlich (4).  Sandilands (4) did not play but was not included in the figures because he is not expected to play R1.

As well as the red number, allowances are also made for travel-weariness, days break between games, playing conditions and players short of a gallop.  This all gets compiled into the “seasonally adjusted” scores for each NAB Cup game below.  Following on from the Fremantle round 2 example, the Blues (with a red score of 17) thrashed the Dockers (with a red score of 11) by 70 points in Melbourne.

The score out of 6 given (see for each team below) for this would usually be 6 out of 6 for Carlton and 2.2 for the Dockers.  The red scores would indicate that the Blues’ form was even better than that.  But allowance was made for the fact that Freo played a practice match in Adelaide the week before and were, therefore, travelling east two weeks in a row.  And they also got some credit because Fyfe was short of a gallop.

The end result is how teams REALLY went as a guide to their form leading in to R1.
